Victoria Falls: Africa's Greatest Natural Wonder — A Complete Visitor's Guide

Twice the height of Niagara, wider than any waterfall on Earth — Victoria Falls is a force of nature that must be experienced in person. Here is everything you need to plan your visit to one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

The Smoke That Thunders

The local Kololo people called it Mosi-oa-Tunya — "The Smoke That Thunders." When the first European explorer, David Livingstone, arrived at the falls by canoe in 1855, he declared them "the most wonderful sight I had witnessed in Africa." Nearly 170 years later, that assessment still stands.

Victoria Falls spans 1,708 metres in width and plunges up to 108 metres into the Batoka Gorge below. At peak flow (March–May), over 500,000 cubic metres of water thunder over the edge every minute, creating a roar audible from 40 kilometres away and a spray column visible from 50 kilometres. There is nothing quite like it on Earth.

Zimbabwe vs Zambia: Which Side?

Victoria Falls sits on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Both countries offer access, and both have their advantages. Many travellers — wisely — visit both.

Zimbabwe Side (Victoria Falls Town)

  • The most dramatic frontal views of the falls
  • The famous Rainforest Walk runs the entire length of the main falls
  • Victoria Falls town offers excellent infrastructure, lodges, and restaurants
  • Better access to Hwange National Park safaris
  • Home to most of the adventure activities including bungee jumping from the bridge

Zambia Side (Livingstone)

  • The celebrated Devil's Pool — a natural infinity pool at the very lip of the falls (accessible July–January)
  • A more intimate, quieter experience than the Zimbabwe side
  • Better views of the Eastern Cataract
  • Access to the Zambezi National Park upstream
  • Livingstone is a pleasant town with excellent heritage

Our recommendation: If time allows, spend at least one night on each side. A day visa for Zimbabwe from Zambia (or vice versa) costs approximately US$50.

Best Time to Visit

Victoria Falls is a year-round destination, but the experience changes dramatically with the season:

High Water Season (February–May)

The Zambezi is at its most powerful. The falls are thundering, spray-drenched, and almost overwhelming. You will be completely soaked on the Rainforest Walk — bring a waterproof bag for your camera. The full spectacle of the falls is on display, though spray obscures detailed views.

Low Water Season (August–December)

Water levels drop and more of the rock face is visible. Views are clearer, photographs are sharper, and Devil's Pool is accessible. The falls are less dramatic than peak flow, but the activities and sunshine are better. September–October is particularly popular.

Shoulder Season (June–July)

A sweet spot — water levels are still relatively high (good views) but beginning to drop (accessibility improving). June is generally excellent for combining the falls with a Botswana or Zimbabwe safari.

Activities at Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is not just a viewpoint — it is one of Africa's adventure capitals. Activities available include:

  • White Water Rafting — The Batoka Gorge offers Grade 5 rapids considered among the best in the world (seasonal based on water levels)
  • Bungee Jumping — 111 metres off the Victoria Falls Bridge, one of the world's great bungee locations
  • Helicopter Flights — "Flight of Angels" provides a 15-minute aerial perspective of the full falls system
  • Devil's Pool Swim — Swim to the very edge of the falls with only a natural rock lip between you and the abyss (July–January only)
  • Sunset Cruises on the Zambezi — Gentle boat trips with hippo, crocodile, and elephant sightings against a sunset backdrop
  • Elephant-Back Safaris — Ride through the bush on trained African elephants
  • Micro-light Flights — Open-cockpit ultralight aircraft for low, slow views over the falls and Zambezi
  • Village Tours — Visit local communities for an authentic cultural perspective

Combining with a Safari

Victoria Falls is brilliantly positioned as the start or end of a broader Southern Africa circuit. Ideal combinations include:

  • Victoria Falls + Botswana Okavango Delta — The classic Southern Africa safari pairing. Fly between Kasane and Maun for an extraordinary contrast of environments.
  • Victoria Falls + Hwange National Park — Zimbabwe's largest game reserve, famous for enormous elephant herds.
  • Victoria Falls + Chobe National Park (Botswana) — Just 90 minutes by road. Chobe hosts the world's largest elephant population.
  • Victoria Falls + Cape Town — A superb combination of adventure and cosmopolitan culture.

Practical Information

How to Get There

Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) in Zimbabwe receives direct flights from Johannesburg (1h 40m), Nairobi (3h), and increasingly from international hubs. Livingstone Airport (LVI) in Zambia also receives flights from Johannesburg. Flying in via Johannesburg is typically the most economical international connection.

Visas

  • Zimbabwe: Most nationalities obtain a visa on arrival ($30–50 USD). A KAZA UniVisa ($50) covers both Zimbabwe and Zambia — ideal if visiting both.
  • Zambia: Day visitor passes and short-stay visas available on arrival.

Currency

US dollars are widely accepted and preferred in both Victoria Falls town and Livingstone. Carry small denominations for tips and market purchases.

Health

Both countries are malaria zones. Anti-malarials, insect repellent, and long-sleeved clothing after dusk are strongly recommended. Yellow fever vaccination may be required depending on your arrival country.
